MTD Walkers PLC came into being in November, 2006 as a result of MTD Capital, a leading Malaysian based infrastructure development company with offices in thirteen countries, around the world purchasing a majority stake in Kapila Heavy Equipments PLC, the holding company of the Walkers Group of Companies which had been established as a public Company in 1981 and subsequently listed on the Main Board of Colombo Stock Exchange in 1983. Kapila Heavy Equipments PLC was subsequently re-named as MTD Walkers PLC on 12th December 2007. Walkers Group of Companies has a long history of being in operation in Sri Lanka for over 150 years with its origin in 1854.
MTD Walkers PLC has had as its core businesses the manufacture of tea machinery, and have now ventured into other engineering functions such as piling (heavy foundations), steel fabrication and other infrastructure development projects.
MTD Walkers PLC has five subsidiaries namely Walker Sons & Company Limited, Walker Sons & Company Engineers (Private) Limited, Walker Sons & Company (Distributors) Limited, Walkers Piling Private Limited and Transport & General Finance Company Ltd.
The name of Walkers is synonymous with the tea and rubber plantation industry in Sri Lanka having been in the business of manufacturing, installing and maintaining machinery for over a century. With the development of the machinery produced, Walkers have today ventured into the Global Market with more advanced automated machinery to support the orthodox manufacture of tea.
Walker & Sons Company Engineers (Private) Limited, project division has undertaken and completed large steel fabrication work with Holcim Lanka Limited, renovation of 8 stop-logs in Randenigala project of Mahaweli Authority, Arugambay steel bridge, repairs to tank no.27 of Ceylon Petroleum Corporation at Kolonnawa, repairs to tank no.3 of Kelanitissa Power Station of Ceylon Electricity Board, fabrication and installation of new steel radial gates under Moragoda Project of Irrigation Department.
The Air-conditioning and Refrigeration Division of Walkers provides Engineering solutions for precision air conditioning applications such as Data Processing Centers, Telecommunication Facilities, Switching Stations, Networking Rooms and other heavy Industrial Applications where the Indoor temperature, relative humidity and air filtration levels have to be maintained within close tolerance. The division provides comfort, central air conditioning systems inclusive of Systems design, installation, commissioning and after sales services for commercial banks, high-rise IT educational facilities, shopping and office complex namely Sri Lanka Telecom, University of Colombo – School of Computing, Sri Lanka Institute of Information Technology, Dankotuwa Porcelain Limited, Central Bank of Sri Lanka, Ceylon Electricity Board, Commercial Bank Head Quarters.
Walkers Piling Limited, a subsidiary of MTD Walkers PLC was a pioneer piling company in Sri Lanka, which commenced operations on 9th January 1981. Walker Piling has undertaken very large piling contracts in both public and private sector in Sri Lanka. Some of the recent projects undertaken and completed by this division are Sri Lanka Customs building, Maligawatte fly-over, Kerawelapitiya power station, Arugambay bridge, Ceylon Petroleum Corporation head Quarters building to name a few. Walker Piling being in the industry for Twenty Eight years, is a ISO 9001-2000 certified Company.
MTD Walkers PLC today is a well established Company with managerial, technical and financial support provided by MTD Capital BHD, Malaysia to undertake any challenging projects in its field of activities both locally and abroad.
MTD Walkers PLC having signed an agreement with the vocational training Authority of Sri Lanka provides skills development training to young craftsmen in many of its engineering fields, thus contributing to the Corporate Social Responsibility.
